Minor surgery course

Dates:  8 - 9 September 2010 and 6 - 7 October 2010

Location: London

Venue: Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, LONDON, W1G 0AE

The aim of the 2 day course is to instruct General Practitioners and other primary care clinicians, in the skills needed to perform minor skin surgery on their local population. Studies have shown that patients much prefer having these procedures done by a familiar doctor in their own practice.

The course is highly interactive and due to the high tutor to delegate ratio, we are able to cater to all skill levels. The absolute novice will be given a thorough introduction to this skillset and form an opinion as to whether they wish to pursue minor surgery further in their practice, and the experienced primary care skin surgeon will perhaps use this as an opportunity for some expert mentorship and an opportunity to keep their knowledge and skills up to date.

The course covers all the minor skin procedures, joint injections and non surgical techniques covered by the GMS contract for primary care minor surgery. Our lifelike, custom made and exclusive latex models, mean that we can safely tutor people on the properties, handling and closure of skin.

The course concludes on highly interactive training on the management of the pigmented lesion, which has been shown to improve melanoma detection rates in primary care.

At the end of the course, delegates should be able to take home some practical skills, be aware of their medicolegal and contractual obligations and be able to apply up to date evidence based practice in the detection and management of common skin conditions. Most importantly delegates will gain skills to keep this important set of procedures closer to home for the patients.
